To medicate a dog's ear, after putting the drops in, you should lower the ear and keep it "shut" for a few seconds, massaging the root of the auricle. If you fail to block the ear immediately, the dog will shrug and spread the medicine all over. ![]() To put eyedrops in a dog's eye you should drip the liquid from above, onto the cornea; you will then dry the eye with a gauze. If there is need of medicate both eyes, it is best to use two separate gauzes, to avoid the disease transmitting from one eye to the other because of human error.
To perform a subcutaneous injection it is
sufficient to lift a fold of skin from the dog's neck or back, disinfect
it, insert the needle in an almost perpendicular direction to the dog's
skin and give a firm pat (the skin of a dog is much thicker than human's).
Pull the needle slightly back and inoculate. The plunger should be pushed slowly (some products sting if injected too rapidly), but not too slowly, to avoid the dog having intolerant reactions. Be careful: if the plunger does not move smoothly, the needle is not in the proper position (it is in the infradermal position instead of being subcutaneous). In this case it is sufficient to slightly move the needle back or forth, until the plunger runs smoothly and inoculate. When giving a shot to the dog it is always wise to have an assistant who will keep the dog still.
Intramuscular injections are performed on
the thigh, and can be given only when the dog is lying or standing up:
for the first time it is better to have the veterinarian explain to you
which is the best anatomical spot to inoculate, and then you'll be comfortable
doing it on your own. There are no particular complications in this operation: you must only ensure to have all the air out of the injection before inoculating the liquid. | |
