The name the English give to this dog is "The Saint", not to shorten the name of the breed but to pay respect to the indeed unique qualities of the dog that have saved many human lives, coming to rescue wayfarers in distress and finding people buried under snow.
More than a mere breed, the Saint Bernard dog is a legend, a living myth. This dog appeared in history by the side of the monks who lived, since the year 1000, in the Swiss monastery of the Great Saint Bernard Hospice, founded by Saint Bernard of Mentone near the homonymous mountain ghat.

This dog is known and loved all over the world: hearing its name everybody thinks of the good giant with the barrel round its neck...
